Art for Places

Sefton

Sefton was the first area in the Art for Places programme to commission a public art work.

In 2008 a steering group of community representatives and other stakeholders came together to develop a project brief and chose a site for the commission.

After much research and deliberation, the site chosen was the Leeds Liverpool Canal, which runs through Sefton's HMR neighbourhoods. It was decided that the art work should be an artist or architect designed structure built specifically for the canal, and would have the working title Sefton Waterworks.

Earlier this year a competition was held for designs, with entries received from all over the world. Five of these designs were shortlisted and the artist and architects were given the opportunity to submit further detail about their proposals.

Judging took place on Thursday 10th September 2009, with the artists and architects given the opportunity to present their ideas to the panel of judges.

The winner was announced on Thursday 17th September 2009 at a special event at St. Winefride's School in Bootle. The site is next to Carolina Wharf, which is one of the locations where the installation could go.

London architects firm Duggan Morris has been chosen to build their design of a canoeist's profile in full motion which opens out with jetties won over the judges in the competition.

The design will now become a reality and once built will provide leisure resources to the local community as well as being a landmark piece of art in the public realm.

Joe Morris one of the architects behind the winning entry said:

"We are absolutely astonished and delighted to win. We believe our design will compliment the regeneration already taking place in the area and will enhance the work already completed. We can't wait to get started and are looking forward to spending a lot of time in the area as we move forward."
