NEW REPORT REVEALS FUTURE HOMEBUYERS HOPES!

The findings of a new study commissioned by Merseyside Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder NewHeartlands have shown that people's aspirations regarding their future homes are changing.

Changes in the local economy, restrictions on mortgages in the credit crunch and the types of houses and tenure people choose are all factors in the report prepared by WM Enterprises consultants on the HMR areas across Merseyside.

The aim was to identify housing needs as well as any obstacles future homebuyers face and how they can be dealt with so that Pathfinders, Housing Associations, Developers and Landlords can amend their programmes to better suit potential buyers or tenants.

The consultants carried out research with a number of focus groups across the Pathfinder area and also used statistical data from housing needs studies.

Yesterday, representatives from a variety of backgrounds met and discussed the findings at a conference in Liverpool.

The conclusions confirmed a demand for more traditional family type housing in the Pathfinder area and for the continuation and promotion of home ownership products to help potential owner occupiers. However, in the short or medium term there was also a demand for private and social renting largely as a result of the recession and uncertainty over employment. In addition, the study confirmed the need for continued place marketing and branding of certain areas to combat historical perceptions around issues such as anti social behaviour.

Tim Jago, Policy and Strategy Officer for NewHeartlands who organised the event said:

"This research and dissemination event enables the Pathfinder partners providing housing in Pathfinder areas to make sure they are meeting people's housing needs. Knowing about the effects of the credit crunch for example could change what is proposed for the Pathfinder areas and consequently enable people to access what they want. It was also reassuring to see the need to build on the place marketing currently being worked on by NewHeartlands and its partners."
