LOOKING AT THE ALTERNATIVES IN THE PRIVATE RENTED SECTOR.

With increasing social housing waiting lists and difficulties accessing owner occupation as a result of the 'credit crunch', NewHeartlands has taken a lead in establishing a Private Rented Sector Working Group to develop the potential of the private rented sector as a viable alternative for accessible housing. The group brings together key officers from the six local authorities in the Liverpool City Region to share and promote good practice and facilitate the delivery of the new proposals for an effective private rented sector. It will also carry out an audit of the local authorities' functions, towards the private rented sector and assess strengths and weaknesses.

A much greater focus and strategic approach to the private rented sector is now developing across the Liverpool City Region. The Liverpool City Region Multi Area Agreement (MAA), which is to be signed off on 15 September, includes a Housing Platform Paper with significant proposals to develop an effective private rented sector. As part of the MAA development a Merseyside Landlord Accreditation Feasibility Study has been completed by Michael Howard Associates which recommends the development of a sub - regional accreditation scheme.
